Current events

The VMI-Vienna Music Institute organises regular student and lecturer concerts both at the VMI and outside at other venues. Many of these events have become well established over time and there are often exciting jam sessions taking place after the concerts where VMI students and other musicians can meet. Stop by and join in!

 

 

 

NYCMM 2017

The NYC Music Marathon has been taking place every summer in Mattighofen in Upper Austria for many years and features exceptional musicians. At the beginning of the summer semester 2017, some of these musicians will be at the VMI to play a short concert and give a workshop. The NYCMM 2017 itself and the scholarships that are awarded will also be explained in detail. Last year a number of VMI students attended the NYCMM and also received scholarships.

Let´s play together

The long-standing VMI tutor and tapping virtuoso Fred Eisler holds regular jam sessions at the Bierkanzlei in Vienna. Fred Eisler studied guitar and jazz composition at 'Berklee College of Music' as well as at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz – the KUG. Active with jazz/pop ensemble 'Camena' and at Burgtheater Wien, etc. concert tours have led the guitarist through Austria and its neighbouring countries, the USA, South America and South Africa. Celebratory Graduation Ceremony

On the 1st of March, 2017 the VMI concert hall will host the celebratory graduation ceremony for VMI winter semester 2016/17 graduates. Following an address by the institute director and individual laudatory speeches, the formal graduation ceremony will begin. Music will be provided by upcoming summer semester 2017 graduates.

Masterclass with Xantone Blacq

The VMI-Vienna Music Institute is proud to present a free masterclass/live performance workshop with Xantone Blacq on the  06.03.2017 in the VMI concert hall. The London-based keyboardist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer played in the Amy Winehouse band for 3 years, toured with Nigel Kennedy (also featuring on Nigel's last three studio albums), and has worked as keyboardist and singer with  Jessie J, Mark Ronson, Dionne Bromfield, Candi Staton and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others.

VMI Jazz Jam Sessions

Organised and led by VMI guitar student Simon Cremer in cooperation with VMI community, the 'Jazzclub 1019'  is host to concerts and sessions every second Tuesday. The sessions give students the opportunity to gain routine and confidence in their performance of jazz standards. The opening bands are mainly made up of VMI students and tutors.

Sirius Sessions & Musicians Stammtisch

Monthly concerts, sessions and musician get-togethers under the direction of VMI student and drummer  Fabian Steinrück are kicking off in March 2017 at 'Sirius', only a short walk away from the VMI! For musicians and non-musicians alike, this is a great opportunity to meet up and enjoy good music.

VMI-Night at the 'Blue Tomato'

For almost 2 decades the 'Blue Tomato' has been a regular fix point for VMI students to perform with or simply meet up with like-minded musicians. After the rehearsed opening sets under the direction of the respective VMI ensemble leaders, the stage transforms into a jam session until midnight. The 'Blue Tomato' is the perfect place to meet, jam, chat and plan new projects with students and musicians of all styles.

Open Day

The  VMI-Vienna Music Institute is opening its doors again to the world on the 31st of March, 2017 from 10:00 to 20:00 and is proud to present a comprehensive and fun programme. From workshops and live performances, interactive participation and observation in diverse VMI lectures, to free and non-binding entrance exams and level checks, institute tours and detailed information sessions – Open Day guests have the chance to see first-hand what makes the VMI-Vienna Music Institute the ideal choice for a study in music. Tools at Work at the VMI

The authorised Apple dealer and service specialist 'Tools at Work' has been a competent contact point for questions regarding Apple products and audio solutions for music makers for over 20 years.  Kurt Richter – lecturer at the 'Donau Universität Krems' and 'SET School of Entertainment & Technology' and experienced sound engineer (Ludwig Hirsch, Wolfgang Ambros, The Tiger Lillies, …) - will give a workshop on the 5th of April from 15:00 to 17:00 where he will be presenting the newest products for music makers and answering relevant questions. Here are some of the points and questions that will be covered:

- Which Apple hardware makes sense for music production?

- A short presentation of Logic Pro X and Pro Tools.

- What further hardware do I need (audio interface, microphone, speakers, controller, keyboard)?

- What else should I consider for my workplace?

Workshop with Chanda Rule

As an introduction to the new VMI Singer/Songwriter study, New Yorker Chanda Rule is giving a workshop on 24.04.2017. Workshop participants will also be able to receive further details about the study where students will be coached by internationally active VMI tutors and in show and music business experts.

Workshop with Mel Verez

The graduate singer and songwriter Mel Verez has worked with such international acts as The Teddy Blackwood Imperials (original Elvis gospel singer), Hubert Tubbs (Ex-Tower of Power) and the American singer Shelia Michellé and counts among the best songwriters in Austria (ÖKB 2016). The following topics will be covered in the workshop on the  27.04.2017:

- Singing with  body awareness and support

- Developing your vocal expression

- Discovering new vocal sounds (modes for various styles, such as soul, rock, RnB)

- Solid singing performance in the studio and live through the use of the right technique

- Rhythmic precision - an important factor for expression

- A journey into rap

VMI Drummer Night

The  11.05.2017 in the VMI concert room – 5 VMI drum tutors will be taking to the stage to present concert programmes, various band projects and to discuss modern drumming and working with other musicians. The following drummers will be taking part:

Workshop with Tony Zawinul

Tony Zawinul, son of the legendary Joe Zawinul and living in the USA, is a successful multimedia artist, musician, film director and is chairman of the Zawinul Foundation. On the 18th of May, 2017 beginning at 18:00, he will be a VMI guest expert for the areas of music production and music management. Workshop participants will get valuable information about these topics and learn what is crucial in order to be successful in international music business.

Info-session with Konstantin Kraeutler

Drummer and VMI alumnus  Konstantin Kräutler will give detailed information about his time at 'Berklee College of Music' and which other follow-up studies make sense after graduating from the VMI-Vienna Music Institute. He will also discuss ways to save time and money, and possibilities for funding a study. Further to these topics, study possibilities at VMI partner institutes and Erasmus student exchange programmes will be outlined by Mag. Martina Beer.

Workshop with Gisele Jackson

Gisele toured as a ‘Raylette’ with Ray Charles at the peak of his career, having since also shared many a stage with the incomparable Donna Summer and James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. She has performed in 18 countries in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. She has performed solo at the leading jazz houses in the U.S.; she has performed as the opening act for Tito Puente, Bette Midler, The Commodores, the B-52’s and a host of other music giants across a variety of genres; she has performed at Carnegie Hall (with Kid Rock); she has performed at festivals and major openings, at numerous celebrity weddings and corporate events for many Fortune 500 companies. She has performed at Hollywood premieres and award ceremonies and has appeared on-screen singing in the film “First Wives Club” (Paramount Pictures). She was requested to perform at the Inauguration of U.S. President William H. Clinton. And so she went to sing for Bill. Billboard magazine called her a “diva” on the heels of her worldwide smash hit, the club classic “Love Commandments.” The single reached No. 3 on Billboard’s dance chart, catapulting Gisele into the hierarchy of House and the consciousness of the Dance Music community. This power track was on the playlists of every top House music DJ in the World. She ‘let them have it’ at legendary dance clubs Vinyl and Twilo in New York City, Billboard Live and Axis in Los Angeles, The Red Ball in Toronto, and at London’s Ministry of Sound. Her stage credits include Effie in ‘Dream Girls’, Bessie in the ‘Life & Death of Bessie Smith’, Evilene in ‘The Wiz’, Luttibelle in ‘Purlie’ and Frankie in ‘Carmen Jones’. Gisele has appeared on television, including a worldwide commercial campaign for Johnnie Walker. Today, Gisele is a cultural ambassador on a creative continuum that allows her to share and interpret her beloved music with audiences around the world - from New York to Norway, Morocco to Malaysia and from Barcelona to Beirut.

Momentos & VMI

The VMI, in cooperation with the performance theatre project MOMENTOS VIENNA, will be presenting pictures of previous productions taken by students of the 'Fotoschule Wien'. Beginning at 7pm, the evening will feature the musical talents of VMI students who are also to be taking part in the MOMENTOS jubilee production, gathering interdisciplinary experience working together with dancers and photographers. Guests will be guided through the evening by the Brazilian dancer and choreograph Vinicius.

VMI at the Reigen

'Reigen' is one of the most traditional clubs in Vienna, where numerous international stars have performed over the years – from Jim Hall to Scott Henderson. As the summer semester 2017 comes to a close, VMI students will be playing a series of concerts each ending with a jam session. The opening concert on  08.06.2017 includes performances by VMI ensembles coached by VMI tutors Alexander Lackner and Lukas Kletzander. Two weeks later, formations under the musical direction of jazz legend Wolfgang Reisinger,  Hungarian musician and composer Samu Gryllus and the guitar virtuoso Conrad Schrenk will be taking to the stage.

Final Concert

26th and 27th of March, 2017 - It is once again time for the VMI Final Concerts! At 8pm sharp students graduating in the summer semester 2017 will be taking to the stage to deliver an exciting programme with everything from original compositions to songs from diverse musical styles and genres. Harry Tanschek, Andy Manndorff and Conrad Schrenk will be guiding us through the evening. Don't miss it!
